The difference between the micro-squeak and the nano-squeak

“iiiia?”

The sound was not quite a full “meow” or “Miaou” or even the long “miiiiiiaaaaaouuuuuuuuuuuuu” that Cheinha gives me when I feed her.

The micro-squeak from Gatitias is a bit longer than “i” (which is a nano-squeak that Tomas gives when he replies to “Do you want to go out?” Neither cat uses the “m” in “miaou”). Gatitas ended with an impatient “a?” sound that curls up.

When her squeak got my attention, I looked up from my computer and there she was…Standing with her tail curled in a question mark. I realized that throughout the quarter-second of her squeak, she had been staring at me. Now she locked eyes with me. Her stare said enough. “And?”

When I didn’t move, the stare added, “We’re waiting.”

I got up, she rubbed against a side of the wardrobe, and I walked out of my bedroom

She hustled past me and reached the door to the Great Outside, brushing past her brother Gotozo. His Fluffiness slowly unwound from his early morning “scratch my balls” yoga posture and he stretched forward. I watched them from above as I twisted the deadbolt and turned the handle. The two looked like sharks or eels, gracefully snaking their bodies through the opening.

That’s how today started.
